History

The Mumbai Schools Sports Association is a sports promoting body, which caters to Sports needs of the school going children of the City of Mumbai where over 400 schools of all denomination are its members.

Sir Dorabji Jamshedji Tata started the Association with the help of a band of few Sports minded Principals of Mumbai City Schools in 1893. The Association which was started with the Tata Athletic Shield (1893) donated by the House of Tatas was formerly known as the Bombay High Schools Athletic Association is now 124 years old and is one of the Oldest Association of it’s kind in the world. This is also the only Association of its kind in the whole of Asia which organizes and conducts tournaments in more than 19 games and disciplines of sports from the grass root level such as Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Carrom, Chess, Cricket, Football, Handball, Hockey, Gymnastics, Judo, Indian Games (Kabaddi, Kho-Kho), Lawn Tennis, Squash Table Tennis, Throwball and Volleyball. These Tournaments are conducted from the tender age of 8 to 16 years, and around 60 thousand students from Std. 1 to Std X participate in the competitions annually.

We feel proud to inform you that Mumbai Schools Sports Association has been organizing some of the tournaments for over a century.

The MSSA Annually organises, the historic Lord Harris Shield Inter School Cricket Tournament for Boys under 16 years, which is India’s longest standing tournament. MSSA also organises the Giles Shield Cricket tournament the symbol of cricketing supremacy amongst Mumbai Schools, in the under -14 age group. The Harris Shield & Giles Shield Cricket Tournaments have been the bedrock of  India’s Cricketing establishment. Past and Present Cricketers like Vijay Merchant,  Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sanjay Manjrekar, Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kamble, Ajit Agarkar,  Wasim Jaffar, Rohit Sharma, Prithiv Shaw and many more have nurtured by playing through these age old tournaments.
